There are many differences between Macs and PCs. The cost, performance
and programs are all large deciding factors in picking a computer. But now the
answer to the Mac vs. PC debate has finally picked PC as the best choice for
a computer in the 3 categories stated above.
One of the big deciding factors in computer purchasing is the price. For
macs the pricing is very expensive, and you get very little for your money in
terms of computer speed and hard drive size. For example, when comparing 2 high
performance computers; a 2012 Mac Pro and a 2012 Dell XPS 8500, I found that
the Dell XPS 8500 base model was 66% faster and with 33% more hard drive space.
Even with all this the PC is still 229% cheaper than the Mac Pro. The Mac Pro I
was using costs $2500 at its base model and $5199 on the best model. The Dell XPS
8500 only costs $1089 with the speed and hard drive space advantages that I mentioned.
For lower end computers I compared the MacBook Pro for $1849(15”) and the Dell
XPS 15 priced at $1349 (15”). For about 72% of the price of the MacBook Pro,
you can buy the Dell XPS 15 with 68% faster speeds and 25% bigger hard drive.
These examples show perfectly that PC rules the price friendly department. Also
many programs such as Microsoft Word priced at $95 that are much cheaper than
Apples Final Cut Pro X that is priced at a whopping $300. Apple does still have
their own productivity program that is priced at $95 also. “Computers running
Windows can be found usually 40-75% cheaper than a Mac.” (diffen.com) For the
price category as you can see PC is the obvious winner with about 229% cheaper
in the high performance category and 72% cheaper in the laptop category.
Another thing you must consider
is the programs that each system runs. Mac has many different editorial
programs such as iMovie and Final Cut Pro. On the other hand PC has their wide
variety of presentation, writing utilities and productivity tools that they
have in Microsoft Office. PC is a more make-your-own type of system where computer
programmers can make their own program and easily upload it for other people to
buy or download. But many of the windows editorial and design programs are
harder to use for people with no experience. Apple has many supposedly easy to
use programs for editing audio, videos and movies. Diffen.com stats, “Macs attract
graphic designers, video producers, tech journalists, app developers etc.” But
on the PC side “PC has a wide reach to all interests. Business users tend to
use Windows hardware due to compatibility,” (diffen.com). For this category it
is a tie because PCs have a wider variety of programs and tools to help you.
Even though Apples editing software might be considered easier to use it is all
about preference.
Computer reliability is another
key factor in getting a computer. Laptop and Desktop reliability is always
improving. About 25.9 percent of PC buyers say they have experienced at least
one problem with their notebook, “down from 30.9 percent last year and 31.8
percent two years ago,” (pcworld.com). For Pc support about 1 in 5 desktop users (21 percent)
report their problem was never resolved by the manufacturer; “with laptops, the
rate is slightly higher at 23.6 percent,” Says PCworld.com. Apple computers are
usually better for reliability and often have fewer problems. “Just fewer than
8 percent of Apple laptop users in our survey report their problem was never
resolved by the company’s support team, significantly lower than the industry
average.” Macs usually last a couple years longer than your average PC. Yet
again with the 1000’s of dollars you save on your PC you can buy another PC and
still end up saving more money than buying a Mac. If you buy a good quality PC to start with you
shouldn’t have many problems it is usually the lower end pcs ($300-$500) that
have most of the problems. In the 6 PCs that I have used and owned I have never
had 1 virus or problems with the computer. I say the winner for this category
is PC because PCs can be just as reliable as macs depending on the maker and
the quality. And even if you do have problems you will have lots of spare money
that you didn’t spend to buy a newer generation computer.
Whether you are using your
computer for surfing the internet or making a movie PC has you covered. There are
many reasons why PC is better than Mac. And even though everyone has
preferences. PC has Mac beat in places like price, programs and even sometimes
reliability. So if you are looking to buy a computer. PC is the best
computer for you.
